Choosing Color Out of Context
Admit it, you’ve made the common mistake, shown above. Here’s why that doesn’t work…
Colors change based on the colors next to them. You perceive color in relation to other colors.
Next time you need to select that new paint color, paint the new color (2 coats) on a large white board. This will allow you to walk that new color around your entire room and see it in different light during various times of day. You will also be able to look at the color next to your drapes, behind your furniture, next to your rug, flooring and artwork.
Also, never choose a wall color based on a color you saw somewhere else! After finding out the name of a beautiful wall color you saw in a local furniture store and then painting a room in your own home the same color can be tragic. Most likely it will look NOTHING like what you had seen in the store. Why? Colors change based on what surrounds them, the lighting in the room, the time of day you look at the color, the other colors in the room, all sorts of variables. Just because you fall in love with a color you see someplace, don’t assume it will look like that in your home.
